Overview

Oolong the pancake rabbit was a widespread Internet meme consisting of the photo journal of Hironori Akutagawa’s pet rabbit with an affinity for balancing things (like pancakes) on its head. Termed ‘head performance’ by its owner the first object balanced by this talented rabbit was a 35mm film canister on 5/29/1999. The meme became more well known in 2001 when it was covered by syberpunk.com and later by the New York Times. One of the controversies surrounding Oolong the pancake rabbit was the issue of animal cruelty. To which Akutagawawa responded on his site, "Some visitors have written me e-mails, accusing me of being cruel to my rabbit and that I am abusing my pet. This was never my intention when I included numerous links to photographs, showing Oolong's unique ability to hold objects on his head. This is not a site to mock rabbits, or demonstrate animal abuse. I'm sure you understand it if you see whole my site". Oolong sadly passed away in 2003 but his memory lives on in the pictures taken by his owner which can be found here, and if you’re not so good with reading Japanese symbols, here.
